We have observed this issue when upgrading from ESX 4.1 to ESXi 5 when only one of two nics that were uplinks of the switch of the management network were connected. After a while the system will reboot and the upgrade process will restart.

Weird error message

The solution is to connect the nic or to use a loopback adapter so that the nic gets link signal. Upon the next boot the upgrade process will complete successfully.
